This artwork draws on the ukiyo-e kachō-e tradition — a genre of Japanese woodblock prints devoted to birds and flowers, flourishing during the Edo period (1603–1868). Popularised by artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, these works were less about realism and more about atmosphere, rhythm, and the quiet poetry of everyday nature.
In Japanese aesthetics, birds and flowers often represent the passing of time and the fragile beauty of the seasons. Rather than dramatic narratives, kachō-e prints invite slow looking — a moment of calm in a world of constant movement.
Kachō-fūgetsu, meaning birds, flowers, wind and moon, is the traditional Japanese concept of learning from nature, using these natural fundamentals as a lens to discover oneself and develop deeper self-understanding.
