Ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition of the Edo period (17th–19th century), from the works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), one of Japan’s most influential print designers.
Kuniyoshi was renowned for his depictions of warriors, ghosts, and legendary creatures, bringing an unprecedented sense of movement and emotional intensity to the medium. His dragons, in particular, are dynamic and expressive — twisting through clouds and water as living embodiments of natural forces.
In Japanese visual culture, dragons are water deities. They are associated with rain, storms, rivers, and the sea, symbolising both destruction and renewal. Their serpentine forms echo the flow of wind and waves, blurring the boundary between spirit and landscape.
